The Comcast Connection: World’s Largest Media Conglomerate Reaches Everything from Polls to Politicians

Tue, 2019-09-17 00:26

Editor’s note: Back in early August, an investigative piece by a relatively unknown indy journalist, Robbie Jaeger, appeared on the website Medium. He took an innovative approach to looking into concerns that the Democratic political establishment, including the corporate media, had it in for one particular presidential candidate, Tulsi Gabbard. To verify these concerns, Robbie took a side door and dug into the workings of powerful talent agencies who rep major media figures and politicians,…

Have You Noticed How Social Media Purges Always Align with the U.S. Empire?

Fri, 2019-09-13 04:02

Twitter has suspended multiple large Cuban media accounts for reasons the social media platform has yet to explain as of this writing, a move which journalist Dan Cohen has described as “the equivalent of silencing CNN, Fox, WaPo and NPR’s accounts” for that nation. The Union of Cuban Journalists has denounced the move as censorship. Last month we saw Twitter suspend hundreds of accounts which it claims originated in mainland China for engaging in “covert, manipulative behaviors” against the Hong Kong protests, with Facebook and Google/YouTube following suit in…

Understanding the 5 Eyes: Reading Suzie Dawson’s Investigation into the West’s Global Spying Network

Wed, 2019-09-11 06:28

Whether it be print, television or online, mainstream Western media only ever offers fractured coverage of what “intelligence” has become in the post 9/11 era. As a result, citizens of countries most involved in developing this new intelligence legal and operational framework—led by the United States—have next to no idea what’s being done in their name and with their tax dollars. This is, of course, the 5 Eyes, an intelligence sharing partnership initiated by the…

Can the Mainstream Media See Elizabeth Warren Clearly?

Tue, 2019-09-10 04:19

On August 27th, Senator Bernie Sanders put forth a plan to reform the media, protect independent journalism, and safeguard the free press. This is very much in line with his critique of media concentration going back to his time as mayor of Burlington, Vermont in the 1980s. He was also one of only 16 House members who opposed the Telecommunications Act 1996, which helped to rapidly increase media consolidation.  The presentation of this plan to…

Ethiopia’s Choice: Poverty through Grievance or Prosperity through Unity

Mon, 2019-09-09 22:51

My father used to always respond with this one rejoinder during my youth every time I came home and complained about some injustice that I felt was done against me. So what? In ways I did not have the wisdom to understand, my dad was preparing me for a life that is often unfair but one that is nonetheless blessed if only we don’t turn to complaints and bitterness. I’ve written on many occasions about…

Don’t Take Movements at Face Value: Reading Cory Morningstar’s Research into Environmental Activist Greta Thunberg

Fri, 2019-09-06 05:13

A few years back, I was working on a writing and interview project for a national nonprofit in which I spent time with professionals who focused on sustainability. I wasn’t hanging out with Julia “Butterfly” Hill or the descendants of Edward Abbey. These were people who were firmly part of the professional class and operating inside the system to varying degrees. Not everyone’s a radical and I found many of my interview subjects to be…

We’ve Got a New Cold War—Now We’ve Got a New Thought Police to Go With It

Wed, 2019-09-04 05:40

The recent decline of American global power, and the subsequent onset of the U.S./NATO empire’s 21st century cold war with Russia and China, have made the flow of information throughout the capitalist world a lot less free than it was before. To be sure, when this great power conflict started in the early 2010s, censorship and state propaganda had already been intensified throughout the War on Terror. But the emergence of the current alliance between…
