Epstein Prison Guards “Not Cooperating” With DOJ Probe

7 hours 5 min ago

By Tyler Durden

Employees at the Manhattan Metropolitan Correctional Center where convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein reportedly took his own life last week are not cooperating with the Justice Department investigators according to Fox News.

Two senior DOJ officials sent by Attorney General William Barr have been on-site at MCC while the agency’s Inspector General investigates the situation. According to a senior DOJ official, Barr said that “serious irregularities” had been uncovered at the jail.

The night of Epstein’s death, correctional officers did not check on the extremely high-profile prisoner for “several hours” before he died, despite being required to look in on him every 30 minutes. Moreover, guards are suspected of falsifying log entries to show that they were checking as required, according to the Associated Press.

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10841224714367334,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-6931-3360"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//";;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");

In response, officials with the Federal Bureau of Prisons have been on-site at MCC to assist with the investigation.

BOP officials from various regional offices have also been sent to the Manhattan facility to lend their expertise and insight. In addition, a separate BOP “After Action Team” went to MCC earlier this week in an effort to examine what happened the night Epstein died. The use of the “After Action Team” is part of BOP protocol whenever a “significant event takes place at a prison.

Epstein was found dead in his cell on Aug. 10. Earlier Friday, New York City’s medical examiner officially ruled the 66-year-old’s death a suicide by hanging.

Fox News has also learned that 20 of 21 prison staff posts were filled between the hours of 4 p.m. and 12 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, the day before Epstein was found. Of those prison workers, six of them were working voluntary overtime. Between 12 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 18 of 19 staff posts were filled. Of those 18 staffers, 10 were working overtime and all but one of those were doing so voluntarily. –Fox News

Two staffers have been placed on administrative leave, while MCC’s warden was reassigned pending the investigation.

It is indisputable that the authorities violated their own protocols,” said Epstein’s attorneys, Martin Weinberg, Reid Weingarten and Michael Miller.

The defense team fully intends to conduct its own independent and complete investigation into the circumstances and cause of Mr. Epstein’s death including if necessary legal action to view the pivotal videos – if they exist as they should – of the area proximate to Mr. Epstein’s cell during the time period leading to his death.

Epstein’s attorneys also addressed the deceased pedophile’s controversial autopsy, which concluded that he hanged himself using bed-sheets, breaking his hyoid bone near the Adam’s apple. This is typically only broken during strangulation victims; however, they can also be broken via hanging – particularly if the person is older.

We are not satisfied with the conclusions of the medical examiner,” they said, adding “We will have a more complete response in the coming days” (and will bill Epstein’s estate accordingly, we’re sure).

Meanwhile, several women are suing Epstein’s estate, claiming he sexually abused them.

The suit, filed Thursday in a federal court in New York, claims the women were working as hostesses at a popular Manhattan restaurant in 2004 when they were recruited to give Epstein massages. One was 18 at the time. The other was 20.

The lawsuit says an unidentified female recruiter offered the hostesses hundreds of dollars to provide massages to Epstein, saying he ‘liked young, pretty girls to massage him,’ and wouldn’t engage in any unwanted touching. The women say Epstein groped them anyway.

One plaintiff now lives in Japan, the other in Baltimore. They seek $100 million in damages, citing depression, anxiety, anger and flashbacks.

Other lawsuits, filed over many years by other women, accused him of hiring girls as young as 14 or 15 to give him massages, then subjecting them to sex acts. –Daily Mail

Epstein had faced up to 45 years in prison if found guilty of exploiting dozens of underage girls at his residences in Manhattan and Florida between 2002 and 2005.

NRDC and American Tribal Groups’ Update on Cell Tower Lawsuits, The FCC, and Why You Should Care About 5G

11 hours 4 min ago

By B.N. Frank

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is supposed to protect the public by regulating the Telecom Industry.  Instead they have a long history of protecting the telecom industry at the public’s expense (see 1, 2).  This has become way scarier due to the “Race for 5G” which involves installing hundreds of thousands (maybe millions) of small cells in front of homes and everywhere else.

The Telecom Industry gave congressional testimony in February that they have no scientific evidence that exposure to 5G is safe.  That hasn’t deterred the FCC or various elected officials who are still promoting widespread installation.  The FCC is also allowing companies to send satellites into space to blast 5G from there AND trying to loosen regulations so homeowners can be paid to put antennas on their roofs.

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10841224714367334,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-6931-3360"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//";;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");

Opposition and warnings have been publicized by a growing list of credible sources (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) including Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and 19 American tribal groupsUnfortunately, 5G is already operating in many American cities, people are sick, so are their pets, and telecoms are planning to “unleash it” in more cities before the end of the year.

Last week The FCC lost another court case on 5G deregulation and one tribal group weighed in:

The United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit concluded that a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) deregulation order was arbitrary and capricious because it eliminated historic preservation review under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), including tribal consultation and environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), for construction of small wireless facilities or small cell radio towers transmitting a cellular signal in an effort to expedite the rollout of the next generation of wireless service known as 5G. The Court of Appeals concluded that the FCC failed to justify its determination that the public interest did not require review of the deployment of hundreds of thousands of small cells.  The Court said, “In particular, the Commission failed to justify its confidence that small cell deployments pose little to no cognizable religious, cultural, or environmental risk, particularly given the vast number of proposed deployments and the reality that the Order will principally affect small cells that require new construction.”

In June, NRDC posted an article, “5G and the FCC: 10 Reasons Why You Should Care.

  1. While the FCC has limited the review by others, the Commission at the same time has refused to update its own health and environmental guidelines. The Commission’s guidelines date from the 1990’s. In 2012, the General Accountability Office found that the existing guidelines may not reflect current knowledge and recommended that the FCC formally reassess its guidelines. The FCC’s guidelines address only one aspect of potential harm from electromagnetic radiation—heat. The current guidelines do not address other ways in which exposure to increasing electromagnetic radiation from wireless communications can harm human health, as well as the natural systems around us on which all life depends.

Do you care yet?  Research has also indicated that exposure to all sources of wireless radiation is harmfulnot just 5G – and children are more vulnerable to it than adults.

This being said, if you want any say in whether or not this is unleashed in your community, or maybe removed, the time to act is now.

Big Tech has already implemented their own “social credit score” system where they punish people for their political views by deplatforming them, censoring their websites and closing their PayPal/bank accounts.

On the other hand, media outlets which push propaganda in accordance with the desires of our ruling oligarchs are rewarded by having their content algorithmically artificially boosted and handed millions of dollars.

Poll: Only 29 Percent Of Americans Believe Jeffrey Epstein Committed Suicide

Sun, 2019-08-18 21:44

By Chris Menahan

29 percent of American adults believe Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide in jail, according to a new poll from Rasmussen Reports.

From Zero Hedge:

[A] new Rasmussen Poll found that less than one-third of Americans believe the official narrative that Epstein simply offed himself.

Only 29% of American Adults believe Epstein actually committed suicide while in jail, Rasmussen found. Another 42% think Epstein was murdered to prevent him from testifying against powerful people with whom he associated. A sizable 29% are undecided. Other theories have been floated (though they weren’t included in the poll). One is the notion that a ‘body double’ was found for Epstein, then was killed and posed to look like him in his jail, while the real Epstein fled.

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10841224714367334,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-6931-3360"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//";;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");

67% of respondents said they have closely followed news reports about Epstein, while 25% have followed the news very closely.

Among Americans who have been following the story very closely, 56% believe Epstein was murdered. Men are also more likely than women to think that Epstein was murdered.

Rasmussen surveyed 1,000 American Adults on Aug. 12-13, 2019. The study started just as news of Epstein’s death was released.

The poll also identified Bill Clinton as the person closest to Epstein, which could be a serious PR problem for the Clintons since the former president has tried to distance himself from the convicted sex offender and financier.

Just as a reminder, we’re being told to believe there was no video recording his cell at the time of his alleged death, no guards watching over him (one of the guards that was alleged supposed to be watching over him wasn’t even a corrections officer), no witnesses and his cellmate was moved out of his cell just one day before his “suicide.”

The New York City medical examiner on Friday declared the official cause of death was “suicide” and claimed Epstein “hanged himself” with a bed sheet (even though he broke the hyoid bone in his neck which is more common with strangulation).

Before Epstein, there was reportedly only one successful suicide at this jail in the last 40 years.

TMZ released this report on Thursday describing his alleged suicide:

Jeffrey Epstein’s blood vessels in his eyes popped when his air supply was cut off by the bed sheet that was wrapped around his neck … this according to law enforcement sources briefed on the case. We’re told he suffered petechial hemorrhaging, caused when someone hangs himself or is strangled or smothered, but authorities are confident this was a hanging.

We’re told the bed sheets were tied to the top of a bunk bed and Epstein either hurled himself off the top bunk or had his feet to the ground and leaned forward to cut off his air supply. Authorities believe the former is true, because throwing himself off the top bunk and falling violently to the ground could explain why his hyoid bone was fractured.

We’re supposed to believe that a 6-foot tall Epstein, who aimed to “seed” the human race with his DNA by impregnating 20 women at a time and sought to have his penis and brain cryogenically frozen, killed himself in some hilarious fashion where he jumped off his tiny bunk bed (which he shouldn’t have even had) at just the right angle to hang himself in one fell swoop.

if you don’t believe this happened you’re a conspiracy theorist and a domestic terrorist threat

Epstein Was Visited By A Mystery Woman Just Before His Death

Sun, 2019-08-18 06:05

By Jason Bermas

Amid all of the other craziness in the Epstein case, Forbes reported that Epstein had a female visitor shortly before his death.

Jason breaks down why this is yet another anomaly that should be heavily questioned.  Why was he left alone with anyone but legal council or law enforcement? Was this woman in fact a lawyer? Was this simple corruption allowing him to have “female company.” Was she some part of Epstein’s trafficking network?  Was she an intelligence agent?

People Already Hurting From 5G in Geneva, Switzerland

Sun, 2019-08-18 06:04

By B.N. Frank

The Telecom Industry gave U.S. congressional testimony in February that they have no scientific evidence that exposure to 5G technology is safe.  Plenty of research indicates that it isn’t (see 1, 2, 3).

In 2017, Swiss doctor Bertrand Buchs launched a petition asking for a moratorium on installation and many doctors and scientists have already signed it.

Worldwide opposition to 5G is growing and includes individuals and organizations concerned about other issues associated with this technology in addition to biological and environmental risks (see 1, 2).

Regardless, 5G continues to be installed and operated in the U.S. and around the world even though it’s been reported that people and their pets have been getting sick from exposure (see 1, 2, 3).  This is now also being reported in Geneva, Switzerland.

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10841224714367334,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-6931-3360"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//";;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");

Thanks to EMF Researcher, Dr. Bob Morr for posting about this on his website:

I spotted an article on the Swiss website where residents suddenly report about strange side effects they have after the 5G towers have been turned on in Geneva Switzerland. These residents of the same neighborhood in Geneva suffer from various health problems. Are they the victims of a 5G technology whose dangers have not been sufficiently tested anywhere in the world?  We are being forcibly radiated by 5G microwaves.

29-year-old Johan Perruchoud who has been living in Geneva for the past 11 years says that all problems started in April 2019 when the 5G in Geneva was officially turned on. Suddenly he started having problems falling to sleep. He felt at home as being in a microwave. Three antennas 5G have just been put into service nearby where he lives and other people complained of identical disorders, headaches, fatigue.

He called Swisscom who is responsible for 5G antennas being installed in Geneva and immediately the operator went on defensive mode, how everything is tested and perfectly healthy. He claims he had a 2-month sinus infection he had never known before.

Also, his neighbor, a  50 years old Elidan Arzoni, was no better.  On the same date, similar symptoms, more acute, appeared in this actor, who is a director of the Company Metamorphoses in g Geneva. He started to experience strange symptoms like tinnitus, constant ringing in his ears.  At the same time, he felt strong pain on the left side of the head and behind the skull. He was also worried he had a heart attack because his heart was beating so fast.

Well, we made an interview with this gentleman from Geneva to try to find out more about the whole 5G problem.

Register Now for The 5G Crisis: Awareness & Accountability Summit. Online and FREE from August 26 – September 1, 2019.

The article includes interviews with other Geneva residents as well as links to where 5G towers have already been installed:

Dr. Buchs was also interviewed:

I meet more and more with similar problems. In the absence of clear studies, we do not have the right to answer to these people that they are imaginary patients. With the shorter waves of the 5G, no one knows what can happen. Not to mention their potentiation, that is to say, their mixture with 3G, 4G, wi-fi.

Geneva authorities are going against common sense. The precautionary principle is clearly violated. Why in just two months so many antennas (a hundred today in Switzerland) appear? While for any drug, we spend years testing the drug whether it is good or bad?

Cherish Your Privacy? New Anti-Surveillance Clothes Trick Cameras by Making You Look Like a Car

Sat, 2019-08-17 18:45

By B.N. Frank

The rise of “Surveillance Capitalism” by businesses and other entities has made it so that we’re all being subjected to data collection by multiple sources almost all of the time whether we’re conscious of it or not.

Some people willingly participate in data collection.  Others don’t like it but believe there is no point doing anything to stop it.  Then there are those who continue to try to reduce their involuntary participation.  One way is by opting-out of dangerous 24/7 data collecting utility Smart Meters.  Another is by wearing clothes that trick privacy violating cameras.  Fabulous!

From CNET:

A new clothing line lets you camouflage yourself as a car to mess with surveillance cameras. The garments in the Adversarial Fashion collection are covered with license plate images that trigger automated license plate readers, or ALPRs, to inject junk data into systems used to monitor and track civilians.

ALPRs — which are typically mounted on street poles, streetlights, highway overpasses and mobile trailers — use networked surveillance cameras and image recognition to track license plate numbers, along with location, date and time.

Hacker and fashion designer Kate Rose showed off her inaugural line at the DefCon cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas over the weekend. It was inspired by a conversation with a friend who works at the Electronic Frontier Foundation about the “low specificity” or inaccuracy of a lot of plate readers on police cars.

The Adversarial Fashion garments, she said, highlight the need to make computer-controlled surveillance less invasive and harder to use without human oversight.

The collection includes shirts, hoodies, jackets, dresses and skirts covered in modified license plate images and other circuitry patterns. Some of the garb features wording from the Fourth Amendment in bold yellow letters written over separate license plates made to look like the kind you see on vintage California cars

Rose, who’s organized civic hackathons across the US, isn’t the first designer to come up with wearables meant to flip off surveillance cameras.

Artist Leo Selvaggio created a 3D-printed rubber mask aimed at foiling surveillance cameras by making everyone look like the same person — him.

The Adversarial Fashion website also includes DIY resources such as APIs and image-editing tools for those interested in designing their own anti-surveillance fashion.

It’s Official: Epstein Committed Suicide by Hanging, Medical Examiner Rules

Sat, 2019-08-17 08:37

By Tyler Durden

A New York medical examiner announced on Friday that Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide by hanging himself in his jail cell, according to CNBC.

The 66-year-old millionaire pedophile was found in his cell on Saturday morning at the Manhattan Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC), after which he was rushed to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.

Epstein was remanded to jail pending trial on charges of sex trafficking of minors and sex trafficking conspiracy, which were lodged by federal prosecutors in Manhattan last month. He was accused of abusing dozens of underage girls in his mansions in New York and Palm Beach, Florida, between 2002 and 2005. –CNBC

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10841224714367334,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-6931-3360"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//";;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");

The ruling comes after the Washington Post revealed that Epstein’s autopsy found multiple breaks in his neck bones commonly found in victims of homicide by strangulation, the hyoid bone near the Adam’s apple.

Epstein’s blood vessels in his eyes popped when his air supply was cut off by the bed sheet that was wrapped around his neck … this according to law enforcement sources briefed on the case.

–TMZ

That still doesn’t explain the shrieking heard from Epstein’s jail cell according to reports.

Spying on You Is a Team Sport

Sat, 2019-08-17 08:36

By Chris Mishevski

Most people know that the NSA spies on Americans thanks to the revelations by Edward Snowden and other whistleblowers. But the NSA is just the tip of the surveillance iceberg. State, local and federal agencies have joined together the create a massive surveillance-state using a vast array of intrusive technology.

Federal intelligence agencies, including the NSA, CIA and DEA, collect data without a warrant, analyze it to build profiles on its targets and encourages state and local law enforcement to violate our fundamental right to privacy.

Documents obtained by Reuters in 2013 discussed NSA data sharing with state and local law enforcement. The NSA, passes information through the DEA’s Special Operations Division and it’s not about national security as we are told. They are being used domestically for criminal investigations. In 2013, these are the Snowden leaks, The Washington Post reported the NSA is gathering 5 billion records a day on the locations of cellphones worldwide. This includes data on tens of millions of Americans each year- all without a warrant. In 2018, the Statistical Transparency Report Regarding Use of National Security Authorities showed that the government intercepted metadata from more than 500 million Americans in 2017; a 300 percent increase from 2016.

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10841224714367334,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-6931-3360"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//";;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");

The three main authorities for surveillance are Section 215 PATRIOT, Section 702 FISA, and Executive Order 12333. Section 215 was passed after 9/11 and allows the NSA to gather “any tangible thing” from third parties relevant to foreign intelligence. This includes bulk data on Americans as well: phone calls, data and texts. Police were granted new, sweeping surveillance powers to “fight terrorism” following 09/11 events. Whatever the cause of the events, the result is a suspect society where you have to prove your innocence and the monitoring of everything we do in real-time.

Section 702 FISA was passed in 2008 to legalize GW Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program and deals with internet traffic data. EO12333 was issued in 1981 and serves as the primary authority for spying. It governs electronic surveillance that the NSA conducts overseas and allows bulk collection of Americans metadata. Keep in mind this is only what we know publicly. There are likely many other spying tools we do not know about. For example, automatic license plate readers were in place years before it was public knowledge and in the case of Section 702 FISA that law legalized an already active wiretapping program.

A note on 215: in 2013, Edward Snowden revealed that the NSA was using this authority to collect American’s phone records in bulk. In 2015, the Freedom Act replaced 215 so that the NSA can gather phone data on suspected terrorists. It’s not just phone calls that are being gathered. Section 702 allows the FBI and other agencies to use bulk data collected during surveillance of foreign targets in domestic cases. Section 702, under downstream surveillance U.S. intelligence agencies go to tech companies like google and force the companies to turn over data on identified selectors, which are very broad. In upstream surveillance, the NSA partners such as AT&T tap into fiber optic cables and copy the internet traffic data.

The NSA gets most of the attention when it comes to government spying, but state and local agencies are the backbone of the U.S. surveillance state. They collect reams of data using spy-gear funded by the federal government and then share this information across the country. Reams of data ends up in federal databases thanks to the efforts of state and local police.

The feds set up and facilitate this massive surveillance network.

Through fusion centers, state and local law enforcement agencies act as information recipients from federal departments under the Information Sharing Environment (ISE). These include the Director of National Intelligence, which covers 17 other federal agencies, including NSA. In other words, this serves as a channel for the sharing of warrantless surveillance. This information is shared between federal, state and local law enforcement and includes social network spying and CCTV cameras. The Department of Homeland Security funds 79 fusion centers across the U.S. They were created to combat terrorism, but are being used for domestic spying with no limits or transparency whatsoever. Despite these issues, congress reauthorized FISA 702 for another six years. The lesson? We should not count on Congress to limit federal spying.

Fusion centers are partnerships between public and private entities, including local, state and federal law enforcement. They “anticipate, prevent and monitor criminal activity and other hazards, then distribute their findings.” These centers research threats to government and public order, terrorism of all kinds and any international incidents with potential local impact. These centers were largely created in the years prior to 9/11. In 2012, a white paper was submitted to the House of Representatives. “Homeland Security and Intelligence: Next Steps in Evolving the Mission,” written by Michael Chertoff, detailed the DHS evolving mission away from fighting terrorism toward administering a domestic intelligence agency that would integrate local and state law enforcement into one unit. This paper discussed shifting the focus away from “foreign terrorism” to “specific homeward areas.” The paper also talks about building a DHS/police hybrid agency that can monitor Americans in any town and prevent threats. The goal of the fusion center is to detect and prevent criminal and terrorist activity. These centers assist law enforcement in the prevention and response to crime and terrorism.

Automatic license plate readers establish patterns of behavior for profiling. By tracking where you visit, how often and with whom law enforcement can learn a lot about you. ALPRs track your movements in real-time, using high-speed cameras with character recognition technologies capable of quickly scanning license plates. They can be set up on check your speed devices, in parking lots and on police cruisers. We know that data gathered by a local sheriff ends up in national databases accessible by state, local and federal law enforcement. The information is also shared downstream from the federal to the state and local levels. For example, the Omaha police department knows where I am driving thanks to license plate readers. Accurate profiles are generated and stored for law enforcement to use based on this technology. In the case of license plate readers, this was happening in secret years before the public discovered it. The Electronic Frontier Foundation released records from 200 agencies amounting to 2.5 billion license plate scans between 2016-17. 99.5% of the plates scanned had no suspicion of a crime but the data was being gathered. These agencies shared this with 160-800 other agencies.

These devices simulate cell phone towers, connecting to devices within range of a cell tower and intercepting the communications from it before sending it out to its recipient. Privacy rights advocates say that these can never be used in line with the 4th Amendment because the data from all devices in range are collected instead of targeted collection of single users. This gives law enforcement the perfect cover to sweep up our communications and track our location –without our knowledge and with no limits. The federal government funds the majority of surveillance programs, and stingrays are no exception. These technologies are funded federally and require the agencies using them to sign non-disclosure agreements. As the Baltimore Sun reported in 2015, a Baltimore detective refused to answer questions on the stand during a trial citing a non-disclosure agreement. This means that rather than reveal the methods of how intelligence was being gathered, prosecutors instructed the detective to drop the case. If they have nothing to fear, what do they have to hide? That is what we are told

Through parallel construction, police build cases based on illegally obtained, warrantless data collected by the NSA and other federal agencies. The feds share information gathered without a warrant and direct the police to make arrests. Investigators build the case along with normal police techniques, getting warrants for information they already have. This creates the appearance of a legitimate case and helps keep secret surveillance programs hidden. State and local law enforcement agencies regularly provide surveillance data to the federal government through the Information Sharing Environment (ISE) and fusion centers. They gather data from ALPRs, stingrays, drones and facial recognition software. Through the ISE, the feds share and tap into vast amounts of information gathered at the state and local level. This allows for the storing, tracking and monitoring of many Americans. The feds gather phone calls, emails, web history and texts on millions of Americans every day. Did I mention that this happens without a warrant, probable cause and public knowledge.

Trump Wants to Permanently Bring Back Deactivated NSA Program Exposed by Snowden

Sat, 2019-08-17 08:35

By Jake Johnson

Civil liberties groups and privacy advocates raised alarm Thursday after the Trump administration called on Congress to reauthorize an NSA mass surveillance program that was exposed by whistleblower Edward Snowden.

The New York Times, which obtained the Trump administration’s request to Congress, reported that “the administration urged lawmakers to make permanent the legal authority for the National Security Agency to gain access to logs of Americans’ domestic communications, the USA Freedom Act.”

“The law, enacted after the intelligence contractor Edward J. Snowden revealed the existence of the program in 2013, is set to expire in December, but the Trump administration wants it made permanent,” according to the Times.

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10841224714367334,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-6931-3360"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//";;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");

The administration claimed in its letter to Congress—which was signed by outgoing National Intelligence chief Dan Coats—that the NSA has suspended the spying program, but Free Press Action government relations director Sandra Fulton said in a statement that this “should give little comfort to those whose privacy rights are routinely violated by authorities.”

“The White House is calling for reauthorization of a program that security agencies have used to spy on innocent people, violate their privacy, and chill free speech,” said Fulton. “The NSA program permits the mapping of relationships among members of marginalized communities and distant associates of targeted individuals, even when most individuals in those communities were never suspected of wrongdoing.”

“Historically, authorities have used such overbroad authority to harass members of these communities,” Fulton added, “especially those who speak out when their rights are under threat.”

Patrick Toomey, senior staff attorney for the ACLU’s National Security Project, urged Congress to ignore the Trump administration’s request and let the surveillance program die.

“It’s long past time that this surveillance program was shuttered once and for all,” Toomey told the Times. “The NSA has been vacuuming up hundreds of millions of Americans’ call records as part of a program that is hopelessly complex and lacks any discernible evidence of its value. We should not leave such a sweeping, unaccountable power in the hands of our spy agencies.”

Activist Post Applies For NewsGuard’s Coveted “Conspiracy” Blacklist

Sat, 2019-08-17 03:42

Activist Post Response To NewsGuard’s Request About Editorial Practices

By Activist Post Editors

Activist Post is being considered for NewsGuard’s exclusive “conspiracy” news blacklist. They recently contacted us about our editorial practices to see if we qualify for this great honor. For those who don’t know, NewsGuard is creating warning labels to protect you from misinformation on the interwebs. They’re very credible with a former Director of CIA and Secretary of the DHS on their board.

Activist Post came from humble beginnings as a free Blogger site during the wild days of the Internet. Back then, Facebook recklessly allowed grown adults to freely discover and share content without any filters or pseudo-state fact checkers. Feral humans could feast on any information they desired. Greedy advertisers didn’t care about your political leanings or if you believed in chemtrails. It was a level playing field for independent bloggers to compete in the marketplace of ideas. As a result, millions consumed Activist Post content without knowing it can turn their minds into gravy.

Because someone may be exposed to untruths on the Internet, warning labels are just common sense. A wise man named Morpheus once said “Most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to defend it.” That’s why we support NewsGuard’s mission of “restoring trust and accountability” in news.

And, if we’re being honest, landing on another conspiracy blacklist would give us major street cred. Imagine an upstart “truther” blog trying to compete with us without NewsGuard’s mark. Imagine anyone seeking to question the official narrative of events. Who are they going to trust? That’s right, a NewsGuard certified conspiracy site.

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10841224714367334,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-6931-3360"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//";;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs"); Editorial Practices

Activist Post does exactly opposite of the corporate media: we ask questions, research, and give our honest take on events. Our agenda is to expose corruption and promote peace and individual liberty.

Our information-gathering process begins by wearing our most comfortable pajama pants, making fresh Costa Rican coffee, and taking a deep drag of sativa cannabis to get the creative juices flowing. Then we examine the corporate media to find which lies piss us off the most. We expose those lies with data and sources, and explain why they threaten peace and freedom. Rinse and repeat.

For instance, every source that NewsGuard labels as “trusted” produces a constant stream of lies and propaganda to promote more war abroad and a nanny police state at home.  Their pathetic journalism and naked agenda gives us an endless supply of content.

Conspiracy Credentials
    1. We don’t believe the official story of September 11th. Building 7 and all. We don’t know what really happened, but it seems clear that someone in power “hated us for our freedoms” judging by how many we lost following that event. Ask your NewsGuard advisors Tom Ridge and Michael Hayden for more details about spying on all Americans without a warrant and molesting innocent people at airports after 9/11.
    2. We think the official reasons for going to war in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Syria and Iran are complete bullshit. Non-existent WMDs and humanitarian bombs to spread democracy, really? Some alternative sources claim they’re about resource control which seems plausible. However, we go even further. We believe the cabal wants to gain control of the few remaining independent central banks on earth. After all, why occupy nations by force when you can enslave them through phony debt? And somebody’s got to protect the US dollar from competition, right?
    3. We think the left-right political paradigm is manufactured to give people the illusion of choice. It’s never been more obvious that politics is a reality show. Incidentally, democracy doesn’t ensure freedom anyway, especially when the public is brainwashed with only one narrative.
    4. We believe central banking and the fractional reserve system makes politics irrelevant.
    5. We think the war on drugs is immoral, illogical, ineffective, and criminally harmful. It destroys more lives than drugs themselves. And it’s a convenient excuse for government to violate the rights of peaceful people. It appears to be a conspiracy too.
    6. We are pro-choice for vaccines. We oppose forced medication. Gasp!
    7. We don’t think CO2 is a pollutant.
    8. Our YouTube channel was terminated before it was cool for saying sex robots were objects, not subjects. It must’ve triggered the robot censors presumably because it thinks it’s alive.
    9. We were labeled “Russian Propaganda” for publishing unfavorable things about Hillary Clinton. A claim we admitted to here.
    10. We have acquired “Strong Conspiracy” ratings from other agencies:
    • MediaBiasFactCheck about Activist Post – “Sources in the Conspiracy-Pseudoscience category may publish unverifiable information that is not always supported by evidence. These sources may be untrustworthy for credible/verifiable information, therefore fact checking and further investigation is recommended on a per article basis when obtaining information from these sources.”
    • Washington University academic paper features Activist Post as one of the “Influential Domains in Alternative Narratives.”
    • SourceWatch labels us a conspiracy site for the books we recommend. Whatever you do kids, don’t read these books.
    • RationalWiki says Activist Post’s specialty is “left-wing conspiracy-mongering.”
    • US News and World Report says Activist Post is a “fake news site to avoid at all costs” citing, a site that no longer exists likely due to civil lawsuits…

We hope this is enough to qualify for NewsGuard’s conspiracy warning. The label would help us keep undesirables away. We only want free-thinking individuals who prefer peace, love and liberty at Activist Post. Close-minded, indoctrinated tools who want more war, hate, and oppression will have a safe space at NewsGuard’s green-check websites.

U.S. Military Designing A.I. Missiles to Seek and Destroy Targets from 40 Miles Away

Sat, 2019-08-17 01:11

By Nicholas West

Unlike my previous post that took a lighthearted look at the newest Robo-Dog on the market, which has a Doberman head filled with artificial intelligence, the U.S. Army’s newest plans for artificial intelligence aren’t even close to a laughing matter.

The U.S. military has long been obsessed with integrating artificial intelligence into weapons of war, and it appears that they are getting closer to the full-scale rollout of these systems.

A couple of weeks ago I reported about a new type of facial recognition goggle that would help soldiers identify targets from a distance by giving the ability “to see through the eyes” of any weapons system. The U.S. Army stated that the future soldier could then shoot around corners with confidence that their target was properly sighted, as well as also giving the capability to link up with drones.

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10841224714367334,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-6931-3360"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//";;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");

As if that wasn’t a potential disaster of its own, today the U.S. Army has stated that ideally there wouldn’t be a soldier in the mix at all, instead leaving the identification and execution of a target entirely up to a missile equipped with artificial intelligence.

The Cannon-Delivered Area Effects Munition (C-DAEM) system will use GPS to identify enemy tanks and armoured shells, which will be scanned in advance from the skies.

According to sources, the Pentagon will invest vast sums into the AI-guided munitions, which could be ready by 2021.

The weapons will have a range of up to 60 kilometres…and will be able to search an area of more than 28 square kilometres for their targets,’ New Scientist reports. — Source: Daily Mail

As I continue to repeat ad nauseum, some of the world’s leading experts are raising their levels of caution about both the reliability of identification as well as any predictive analytics associated with artificial intelligence. Nevertheless, the militaries of the world are engaged in an A.I. arms race that shows no signs of slowing down.

The U.S. Army has stated many times that these systems are not designed to be fully autonomous from initiation to execution, but rather will use A.I. to pursue targets without any possibility of interruption.

[A] spokesperson for the U.S. Army disputes that this will be a missile that selects its own target. In a statement, they said: “This is not an autonomous weapon, nor is it intended to be. We seek an advanced capability for a round — once fired — to continue pursuing a target despite the types of interference that might cause it to pursue something else. This would improve our capabilities to avoid collateral damage.” In other words, this would be akin to a heat-seeking missile on steroids. — Source: Digital Trends

Nevertheless, it is the unfortunate nature of war that once a country develops a new technology, others will follow up with enhancements, causing a problem-reaction-solution loop that gives ever-increasing lethality to the weapons of war. Meanwhile, the citizens of the world who are paying for these programs with their taxes are left only to wonder where it all ends.

Man’s Best Friend? A.I. Robo-Dog Gets a Doberman Head

Sat, 2019-08-17 00:29

By Nicholas West

While I don’t subscribe to the idea that there are inherently bad breeds of dogs, Hollywood has done its best to create the Doberman as an iconically terrifying animal. Which makes it even stranger that the A.I. Robo-Dog, which already crosses the creepy line for most people, would be topped off by a 3D-printed Doberman head.

Apparently, “Astro” offers a new type of artificial intelligence neural network designed to learn on its own through trial and error. As you’ll read, this Robo-Dog could be used for everything from search and rescue, to the military, as well as law enforcement duties like facial recognition.

So far, Astro is able to respond to basic commands such as “sit,” “stand” and “lie down.” Once developed further and equipped with additional sensors, however, it could find use in applications such as the detection of guns and explosives, guiding the blind, exploring hazardous environments, or assisting soldiers on the battlefield. It would be aided in its work by the ability to search through thousands of faces in a database, sniff out and identify airborne substances, hear distress calls that are inaudible to humans, along with various other robo-dog “superpowers.” – Source: Florida Atlantic University/New Atlas

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10841224714367334,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-6931-3360"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//";;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");

So far, experts in artificial intelligence as well as law enforcement have expressed nothing close to “superpowers” for these systems, instead offering scathing criticism for many documented failures and inaccuracies.

At the very least, are we looking at the RoboCop police dogs of the future?

Didn’t anyone see that episode of Black Mirror “Metalhead”?

New Compilation of Utility Smart Meters’ Many Flaws — Outrageous Bills, Fires and More

Fri, 2019-08-16 23:50

By B.N. Frank

Tens of millions of utility Smart Meters have been installed in the U.S. and around the world so there’s a good chance they are installed on your home and throughout your community even if your utility company doesn’t refer to them as “Smart.”

They have been plagued with so many problems — fires, explosions, illness, inaccurate and inflated bills, and more — that citizens everywhere and elected officials have taken action against them AND a documentary was produced about them.

Big Thanks to D.K. Niwa for this new awesome compilation article about these horrible devices that no one should be forced to accept from their utility companies.

Vindication for the Woodstock Nation 1969

Fri, 2019-08-16 23:20

Op-Ed by Susan Boskey

As someone who attended the Woodstock Festival in 1969, I write this on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its first day, August 15, 2019. Curiously, I have been reading about Woodstock50 which failed to happen and the many commentaries about what a miserable failure the original three-day festival had been. Dirty, drugged-out hippies – what’s the point?

Not to mention I noticed online how most media outlets did not get the memo that though the Woodstock50 never happened, the events at the original Bethel, NY site, now Woodstock museum and auditorium, are in full swing. I know this because my best friend, Donna, with whom I attended the festival in ’69, lives near Bethel, New York. As an NPR affiliate broadcaster in New York interviewing different, interesting local people for her program, this week she’s interviewing people associated with the original and current series of events at the Bethel site.

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10841224714367334,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-6931-3360"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//";;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");

But I digress. This evening I’ve been listening to a replay of the original festival including the messages in-between acts shared from the main stage about ‘lost persons’, emergency calls for specific people, lost property and letting people know about the medical tent. Forty-five unpaid MD’s were on site for emergencies including with insulin for those in need. It was an ad hoc community attempting to address individual and community concerns as they arose.

At one point, early on, some guys began to climb the sound towers alongside the stage in order to get the best ‘seat’. I remember (and heard on the replay) how a fellow on the main stage mic literally talked them down in the least aggressive yet crystal clear manner. The climbers voluntarily came down without incident. Soon after Tim Hardin came on and asked that we each light a match, which sounds innocuous enough, but was actually a stunning moment of the solidarity of over 400,000 people.

Organically Grown CBD Oil and Products Available (Ad)

As far as I could tell no state or local police attended; the security was internal. The medical tent served those who overdosed, were ready to give birth, or had any type of health emergency. Babies were born. A couple of people died there but no one at Woodstock was murdered like at the Altamont Festival in Northern California a few months later, which I regretfully also attended.

In 1969 at Woodstock some may remember that we ceremoniously named ourselves: the Woodstock Nation. More than a manufactured commercial gimmick, we spontaneously aligned with the spirit of love, inspired by a shared awareness of the senseless war in Vietnam, killing over 50,000 of our own and so many innocent Vietnamese.

Our mission: peaceful co-existence. What happened there was beyond what any individual or group could have orchestrated: synchronicity at its finest. Don’t get me wrong, I would never, ever, say Woodstock was a perfect world by any stretch of the imagination;  it was, however, what Jimi Hendrix called, an “experience”. I doubt anyone who was there would deny it.

Yes, cannabis and drugs were involved and yes, I believe that we were mostly highly naive and inexperienced in the ways of the world. Yet the experience, though anecdotal,  was that 400,000+ jammed together people demonstrated their intent to ‘do no harm’ in community while celebrating the individual and collective possibility of living in harmony.

This is an absolutely noteworthy historical fact.

Make no mistake, the Woodstock Nation was a gift to humanity: a gift that lives on in the hearts of those who attended, and those who did not, committed to inner peace and to the vision of a transcendent ethic beyond differences. The so-called ‘failure’ talking point so quickly trotted out about the Woodstock story by the media, in my view, is simply revisionist history.

Given that ‘there’s ‘no going home again’ is often true, the time and place of the Woodstock Festival must be taken into full consideration. Yet the intangible, but equally real, Woodstock Nation exists forever outside of the boundaries of time and space. Since the Woodstock Nation did, at one point in time, show up in physical reality, might such synchronicity beyond our control show up somehow again?

“Peace at any price”, one of our generation’s mandates, is evergreen; it is a truth out of time. I believe we the people are more powerful individually and collectively than a government that appears to depend on war for the health of the economy.

Gordon Chang: Gold to Benefit as Chinese Economy Hits the Wall

Fri, 2019-08-16 23:20

By Mike Gleason

“No China Trade Deal Until 2020, Maybe 2021… Maybe Never”

Mike Gleason: It is my privilege now to welcome back Gordon Chang, author, television pundit and columnist. Gordon is a frequent guest on Fox News, CNBC and CNN among others, and is one of the foremost experts on Asian economics and geopolitics, having written books on the subject, and it’s great to have them back on with us.

Gordon, it’s a real honor to have you on again and thanks so much for the time today. I know you’re a man in high demand these days given your expertise on Asia and China in particular and I really appreciate you coming on to talk to us. How are you?

Gordon Chang: I’m fine, and it’s a real honor for me to be on your podcast, so thank you very much, Mike.

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10841224714367334,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-6931-3360"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//";;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");

Mike Gleason: Well, trade tensions with China have been one of the big stories in the financial press for the past year and a half. We’ve seen U.S. equity markets gyrate up and down. One day traders are euphoric on rumors that a deal with China will soon be reached. The next day, they’re depressed over news of escalating tariffs and some other negative developments. Most recently, we saw a big rally in the stock market on the announcement that some tariffs will be delayed by a few months, although with the further inversion of the yield curve here today, the day we’re talking, Wednesday, the stock market is giving pretty much all of that back. But that aside, I’d like to start by getting your assessment of the prospects for a trade deal here, Gordon. Do you think we’re going to see these tensions resolved in the next few months?

Gordon Chang: Certainly not. I don’t see a comprehensive trade deal until 2020, maybe 2021, maybe never. Problem is Xi Jinping, the Chinese ruler, doesn’t necessarily want a deal. He owns this trade war, quote-unquote, and if he makes significant compromises, he’s going to accept the political responsibility for that. You’ve got to remember that accumulating great power is of course an advantage, but it means he also accumulated great accountability. He can’t blame other people. So I think that the Chinese political system right now is pretty much frozen, and that means we’re not going to see a comprehensive deal. We’re probably not even going to see an interim arrangement, either.

Mike Gleason: President Trump has been confident that the U.S. has the upper hand in trade negotiations. He believes China needs the U.S. more than we need them. Frankly, we don’t know if the president’s assessment factors in America’s largest export to China, that being U.S. dollars. We export an awful lot of inflation to China and might be ignoring the vast quantities of U.S. treasury debt they hold. So, it appears as though China does have some leverage here. There is also some political leverage. They certainly know how eager the president is to avoid a recession between now and the 2020 election. On the other hand, it would be hard to overestimate how important exports to the U.S. are to the Chinese economy. What are your thoughts about who is holding the stronger hand here? All right, so who has the upper hand?

Gordon Chang: The United States has the upper hand. You look at all the metrics, and they point in our direction. So first of all, we’ve got the larger economy. Last year, we produced $20.5 trillion of gross domestic product. China claimed $13.82 trillion, but that number is probably exaggerated. Also, we don’t have a trade dependent economy. Everyone wants the U.S. market, and indeed, China is dependent on us. They’re the trade surplus country. And we know from history that it’s the trade surplus countries that get hurt in trade wars, and China is extraordinarily dependent on us.

Last year, China’s merchandise trade surplus with the U.S. accounted for 119.3% of their overall merchandise surplus. That gives us enormous leverage over Beijing. And by the way, Mike, we’ve got a robust economy. We grew 2.1% in the last quarter. China, who knows what they grew, but probably half of what we did at best. And they could have even been contracting the numbers from China, especially the last couple months. The underlying indicators look particularly gruesome. So overall metrics, we’ve got them.

The only issue is political will, and people think that Xi Jinping, the Chinese ruler, has got more of it than we do. President Trump is doing a pretty good imitation of someone who thinks he’s got political will. So, I think for the moment, we can say that the U.S. is going to be safe. There’s going to be a lot of squawking, but Trump doesn’t seem to care too much, and long term, we’re just in the position where we can push the Chinese around. All we have to do is realize that we can do it.

Mike Gleason: Certainly Trump has built up a lot of his credentials as a successful businessman, as a good negotiator, so obviously we do have to keep that in mind. Do you envision China continuing to devalue their currency or are starting to dump dollars to hurt the U.S. bond market? Do you see them pulling something like that or will they just talk about that and use that as a threat, as a negotiation tactic, but won’t actually follow through… what are your thoughts there?

Gordon Chang: I’m not particularly worried about China dumping U.S. treasury obligations to hurt us because we got to, first of all, remember they’ve only got, what, $2 trillion at most in a very big and liquid market, but also, just think about the way the dynamics of the markets work. 100% of our obligations are denominated in dollars. So, the Chinese are going to get dollars and then they’ve got to put them into other currencies in order to hurt us, euros, pounds, yen, whatever, which means that Brussels, London, and Tokyo have got to go out in the global markets to bring their currencies back down in value because they’re going to soar when the Chinese buy them. So, these central banks have got to rebalance their currencies and the only way they can do that is to buy dollars. The Chinese have been talking about the nuclear options since the middle of 2008 but they never do it. And the reason they never do it is because they know it won’t work.

Mike Gleason: Getting back to the Chinese economy, over the years, it has been really hard for U.S. investors to get an accurate picture of what is really happening. We’ve all heard about the massive economic growth there, but then there are conflicting stories. We hear that growth is artificial. Many ghost cities have been built, and China’s economy is a massive bubble which could pop any time. You’ve been one of the strongest voices warning of troubles ahead over there. Recently, you appeared on Fox News and noted the Chinese are doing, “Some things which smell desperate.” Can you share with our listeners what you’re seeing there?

Gordon Chang: Yeah, if you look at, for instance, the numbers from June and July, they show imports are consistently down month after month and that shows weak demand. Car sales, which are bellwether, they were off for 13 straight months in July. You’re starting to see, for instance, urban unemployment increase, and some of these numbers which are supposed to be strong aren’t.

So, for instance, the purchasing managers indices for the manufacturing sector had been flashing negative, both the official one and the unofficial one. Industrial output in July was very low, the lowest in about 17 years or so, something like that. So, we’re seeing an economy right now that is in trouble. You go back, for instance, to December of last year, you had a professor at Brandman University in Beijing. He created a sensation across China when he said, “Look, the economy in 2018 is going to grow no more than 1.67%. It may even contract.”

Now, Beijing reported 6.6% for the year, but they’re not acting as if they’ve got an economy growing that fast. And by the way, even if they were growing at 6.6%, they’re creating an amount of debt which is about five and a half times more than they’re producing nominal GDP. They can do that for a little while because they control borrowers, lenders, courts, everything. But they can’t do that for very much longer. So, I think that they realize they’re in trouble right now and they just don’t know how to get out of it. When their default position is to just sort of spend more government money, but with the debt accumulating the way it is, I don’t think that they can do that for too much longer.

Mike Gleason: We’ve recently seen demand rising for gold and silver, including physical bullion. There are a number of reasons, some good price performances helping, but some of the demand is coming from investors who are increasingly skeptical about the U.S. equity markets, the dollar and even bond prices. As we’ve discussed, the trade dispute with China is one of the wildcards. Another is the risk that the Chinese economy will falter. Back in the summer of 2015 when the Chinese market was plummeting, it was a very rough time for stock markets all over the world. So, we have some recent history to go on there as to how important the Chinese economy can be to the rest of the globe. So, let’s about that one. What do you think it will mean for the U.S. if the bubble in China finally does pop, Gordon?

Gordon Chang: I think people are going to be taken by surprise. I don’t think they should, but they will be because markets do believe that China is growing somewhere close to the reported numbers. But we’re starting to see a rush to safe havens, and especially the 10-year Treasury. People want it, and that’s a real sign that there are problems in the global economy. And of course, China is going to exacerbate that. So, I think long-term, I would imagine that there’s going to be a flight to safe haven and when the Chinese economy does hit the wall, it’s going to be very good to be in 10-year Treasuries, in gold and other safe haven assets.

Mike Gleason: Well, as we begin to close here, Gordon, any final comments that you want to leave us with today? And I didn’t ask you much about North Korea, so maybe give us your thoughts on the developments there and other geopolitical theater that you’re going to be watching over in Asia in the coming weeks and months that investors might want to be thinking about and keeping an eye on.

Gordon Chang: I think the most important thing in terms of geopolitical developments in Asia to watch in terms of effect on financial markets is going to be the situation in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is irreplaceable as a city, but we’re seeing a hardening of attitudes on both sides. You’ve got not only the pro-democracy kids, but you’ve got a big portion of the Hong Kong population, at least two thirds, maybe three quarters, that are supporting the kids because they believe that this is the last stand for autonomy. And because of that hardening of attitudes, I think you’re going to see both sides take positions that probably are going to end up shaking not only the Hong Kong markets, but global markets as well. North Korea, at least for the moment, is a side show. Hong Kong is where we really need to look to get our clues to where things are going.

Mike Gleason: Obviously, a lot of us have seen what happened there this week just on our TV sets about the riots in Hong Kong. Just lastly, what’s your take on that and do you think we’re going to see more of that sort of thing as the unrest grows?

Gordon Chang: Normally, you would think that demonstrations would just sort of lose their vigor and they sort of melt away, which is what happened in 2014 with the occupy protests. But these protests have been actually going on since April. We’re now in our 11th straight week, and they show no sign of stopping. And it’s because I think people believe that this is the last stand. So, there’s going to be difficulties ahead. I don’t think that the Beijing is going to deploy the People’s Armed Police or the People’s Liberation Army into Hong Kong at least until after October 1st, which is the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic, but sometime after that, I’d be very worried that China is going to do exactly that.

And by the way, Mike, we have had video evidence suggesting that mainland police officers or mainland army soldiers are actually on the Hong Kong streets right now dressed in Hong Kong police uniforms. So, for instance, from about a week ago, there’s this video of a Hong Kong riot policemen, who’s obviously from Hong Kong cause he’s speaking colloquial Cantonese, but then he turns to other riot policemen near him and starts speaking to them in Mandarin, which wouldn’t happen if those other guys were from Hong Kong, and indeed, he addresses them as comrade. So, there’s suggestion, which I think is pretty solid, that China’s already deployed. And so this is a situation which is going to get extremely emotional and it’s going to last a long time.

Mike Gleason: Very interesting development. Good catch there. That’s going to be something to keep an eye on, and yeah, maybe we’re witnessing the last stand there. As you mentioned, this could be quite interesting.

Well, Gordon, it’s been another fascinating conversation and we can’t thank you enough for sharing with us your incredibly studied view on the state of things in China and in Asia. We’re very fortunate to have you fill us in and give us your perspective given what’s going on of late and your incredible expertise in that area. And we hope to check back with you again in the future as we learn more about how this will play out and get your comments again. But in the meantime, take care and enjoy the rest of your summer. Thanks, Gordon.

Gordon Chang: Thank you very much, Mike.

Mike Gleason: Well, that will do it for this week. Thanks again to Gordon Chang. You can follow him on Twitter @GordonGChang or check out his book The Coming Collapse of China.

Former MSNBC Reporter Spills Details On Pro-Establishment Bias In Media

Fri, 2019-08-16 21:39

By Caitlin Johnstone

The ridiculous corporate media freakout over Senator Bernie Sanders’ entirely legitimate accusations of pro-establishment bias continues today, with shrill, absurd new headlines like “Sanders campaign continues attacks on journalists” and “Bernie Sanders isn’t sorry” featuring hysterical MSM drama queens rending their garments over the suggestion that plutocrat-owned media outlets could be favorable to the plutocrat-owned establishment.

In response to this cartoonish display of billionaire-sponsored performance art, The Hill‘s Krystal Ball and Saagar Enjati aired a segment on their online show Rising which is as damning an exposé on the dynamics of mass media empire propaganda as we are ever likely to witness. With startling frankness and honesty, the pair disclose their experience with the way anyone who is critical of the establishment consensus is excluded from mainstream media platforms, as well as the way access journalism, financial incentives, prestige incentives and peer pressure are used to herd mainstream reporters into toeing the establishment line once they’re in.

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10841224714367334,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-6931-3360"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//";;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");

I strongly urge you to watch the eight-minute segment for yourself, but I’ll be transcribing parts of it as well for those who prefer reading, as well as for posterity, because it really is that historically significant. I will surely be referring back to this segment in my arguments about plutocratic media bias for years to come, because it confirms and validates everything that analysts like Noam Chomsky have been saying about mass media propaganda like nothing else I’ve ever seen. Status quo propaganda is the underlying root of all our problems, and Ball and Enjati have gifted us with an invaluable tool for understanding and attacking it.

After laying out the evidence from some recent examples of bias against Sanders in the mainstream media, former MSNBC reporter Krystal Ball (yes, her real name) asked rhetorically, “Now the question is why?”

“Look, obviously I’ve worked in this industry for a minute at this point and journalists aren’t bad people, in fact, they’re some of my closest friends and favorite people,” Ball said. “But they are people, they’re human beings who respond to their own self-interest, incentives and group think. So it’s not like there’s typically some edict coming down from the top saying ‘Be mean to Bernie’, but there are tremendous blind spots. I would argue the most egregious have to do with class. And there are certain pressures too — to stay in good with the establishment [and] to maintain the access that is the life blood of political journalism. So what do I mean? Let me give an example from my own career since everything I’m saying here really frankly applies to me too.”

“Back in early 2015 at MSNBC I did a monologue that some of you may have seen pretty much begging Hillary Clinton not to run,” Ball continued. “I said her elite ties were out of step with the party and the country, that if she ran she would likely be the nominee and would then go on to lose. No one censored me, I was allowed to say it, but afterwards the Clinton people called and complained to the MSNBC top brass and threatened not to provide any access during the upcoming campaign. I was told that I could still say what I wanted, but I would have to get any Clinton-related commentary cleared with the president of the network. Now being a human interested in maintaining my job, I’m certain I did less critical Clinton commentary after that than I maybe otherwise would have.”

“Every journalist at every outlet knows what they can say and do freely and what’s going to be a little stickier,” Ball said. “No one is ever going to have their anti-Bernie pieces called in to question since he stands outside the system. Their invites to the DC establishment world are not going to be revoked, and may even be heightened by negative Bernie coverage.”

“Back in the run up to 2016 I wanted to cover the negotiations on TPP more,” Ball disclosed a bit later. “I was told though, in no uncertain terms that no one cared about trade and it didn’t rate. To be clear, this was not based on data but on gut feeling and gut feeling that had to influenced by one’s personal experience mixing and mingling with upscale denizens of Manhattan. I didn’t really push it; maybe they were right. Of course TPP and trade turned out to be one of the most central issues in the entire 2016 election. It turns out that people did, in fact, care. Now this class bias translates into bad coverage of candidates with working class appeal, and it translates to under-coverage of issues that are vitally important to the working class.”

Many journalists – either for self-serving reasons or due to genuine befuddlement – are completely misinterpreting Bernie’s media critique. The person who explained it most clearly was Noam Chomsky in this 90-second answer to an equally confused BBC host. This will clear it up:

— Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) August 13, 2019

Ball’s co-host Saagar Enjati went on to describe his own similar experiences as a White House correspondent.

“This is something that a lot of people don’t understand,” Enjati said. “It’s not necessarily that somebody tells you how to do your coverage, it’s that if you were to do your coverage that way, you would not be hired at that institution. So it’s like if you do not already fit within this framework, then the system is designed to not give you a voice. And if you necessarily did do that, all of the incentive structures around your pay, around your promotion, around your colleagues that are slapping you on the back, that would all disappear. So it’s a system of reinforcement, which makes it so that you wouldn’t go down that path in the first place.”

“I’ve definitely noticed this in the White House press corps, which is a massive bias to ask questions that make everybody else in the room happy, AKA Mueller questions,” Enjati continued. “Guess what the American people don’t care about? Mueller. So when you ask a question–I’ve had this happen to me all the time. I would ask a question about North Korea, like, you know, war and nuclear weapons that affect billions. Or I would ask about the Supreme Court, the number one issue why Trump voters voted for President Trump, and I would get accused of toadying to the administration or not asking what Jim Acosta or whomever wanted me to ask. It’s like, you know, everybody plays to their peers, they don’t actually play to the people they’re supposed to cover, and that’s part of the problem.”

“Right, and again, it’s not necessarily intentional,” Ball added. “It’s that those are the people that you’re surrounded with, so there becomes a group-think. And look, you are aware of what you’re going to be rewarded for and what you’re going to be punished for, or not rewarded for, like that definitely plays in the mind, whether you want it to or not, that’s a reality.”

“Every time I took that message to ask Trump a question, I knew that my Twitter messages were going to blow up from MSNBC or Ken Dilanian or whomever for ‘toadying’ up to the administration, and it takes a lot to be able to withstand that,” Enjeti concluded.

As we just discussed the other day, Ken Dilanian is literally a known CIA asset. This is not a conspiracy theory, it’s a well-documented and historically undeniable fact, as shown in this Intercept article titled “The CIA’s Mop-Up Man”. The testimony that Dilanian’s establishment sycophancy affects not just his own reporting but those of other reporters as well via strategically placed peer pressure is highly significant.

For obvious reasons these insider confessions are as rare as hen’s teeth, so we must absorb them, circulate them, and never forget them. I’m still floored and fall-to-my-knees grateful to Ball and Enjati for putting this information out there for the sake of the common good. Our task is now to use the information they provided to help wake people up from the narrative control matrix.

Epstein Spent Hours Locked in Private Room With Young Female Visitor Before His Death

Fri, 2019-08-16 21:00

By Emma Fiala

An attorney who had visited Manhattan’s Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) said Jeffrey Epstein spent at least two hours alone in a private room with a young woman the day after he was reportedly taken off of suicide watch. The private room is reserved for inmates and their attorneys.

According to Forbes, the attorney, who neglected to give his name in fear of angering prison administration, visited MCC on July 30, only one day after Epstein was removed from suicide watch. Of Epstein’s visitor, the attorney was quoted saying:

The optics were startling. Because she was young. And pretty.

While NBC has reported that Epstein would literally pay his lawyers to just sit with him in one of two private rooms for as many as eight hours a day in an attempt to avoid his cell, the anonymous attorney contends that it was not Epstein’s lawyer, Reid Weingarten—or any other named attorneys—who visited the convicted pedophile that day.

(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10841224714367334,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-6931-3360"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//";;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");

The attorney also said the young woman was in the private room with Epstein for at least two hours during his visit to MCC, adding that the room is locked when an inmate goes inside and unlocked only when the inmate leaves. Handcuffs are removed from the inmate while in the private room and then put back on upon leaving.

Epstein’s visitor was dressed in “Sunday brunch attire” according to the attorney, and she visited the billionaire empty handed—with no visible legal files in her possession.

“If I was him, I would have hired… an old bald guy,” the attorney said.

It turns out, Epstein’s frequent meetings held in one of two private room for the Special Housing Unit was an annoyance to attorneys in need of visiting with their own clients. Waiting times for the room stretched up to two hours from the usual 15 minutes during Epstein’s stay. According to Forbes, “Epstein was monopolizing a scarce resource.”

“They wouldn’t move anybody until he got where he was going, which is what they used to do with El Chapo, too,” the attorney said.

“You meet with your lawyers as needed,” the anonymous attorney added, and, according to his explanation of how life at MCC works, the private interview rooms aren’t typically monopolized by any one inmate as they were by Epstein.

While Epstein’s time at MCC was short, it appears he was already receiving preferential treatment akin to his previous plea deal in 2008. And the anonymous attorney seems to agree:

It sounded to me like a replay of the Florida thing where he got to go to the office … and sit around rather than sit in the cell.

As for the young female visitor? No one has come forward with knowledge of her identity or what she was doing in that small private room with Epstein, but the anonymous lawyer shared his best guess:

I think she was there just to babysit him, and keep him out of his cell, and just keep him company for eight hours a day. Which is not supposed to be the way it works.
