ALCATRAZ ISLAND — On the morning of Thursday, November 28th, 2019, several thousand American Indians and theirallies journeyed from San Francisco&;s Pier 33 for the 20-minute boat ride to Alcatraz Island. The International Indian Treaty Council (IITC) hosted the 41st Annual Indigenous Peoples Sunrise Ceremony.

This year’s gathering commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Alcatraz occupation that began on November 20, 1969 and lasted until June 21, 1971.
